• Ilkay Gundogan opened scoring for the hosts from close range following good work from Raheem Sterling
  • West Brom equalised through a Ruben Dias own goal just before half time from Semi Ajayi’s right-footed effort
  • The Baggies stood firm and frustrated Pep Guardiola’s side to hold onto a hard-earned point on Tuesday night

Manchester City held to a shock draw at home by West Brom as Sam Johnstone makes a string of saves to leave Pep Guardiola’s side five points off the Premier League summit.

City needed a response after their pedestrian Manchester derby performance and took the lead on the half hour thanks to Ilkay Gundogan’s clinical strike.

Lifted by the goal, City briefly increased their levels. Cancelo, having a good game, drove a long shot in to Johnstone’s arms but then, just before half-time, West Brom equalised out of nothing.

A free-kick from the left was only half cleared and when Ajayi turned Nathan Ake inside the penalty area, his shot struck Dias and span past Ederson.

City laid siege to the West Brom goal in the second half but found Sam Johnstone in inspired form as a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick and stoppage-time headers from Gundogan and Raheem Sterling were brilliantly kept out.

The draw leaves City sixth in the table, five points behind leaders Tottenham and Liverpool, while 19th-placed West Brom move to within two points of safety after securing an unexpected yet thoroughly-deserved point.
