Carrefour, which is operated by Majid Al Futtaim in Kenya, has expanded its footprint by opening a ninth outlet at the City Mall in Nyali, Mombasa City.

The new store is the first of three currently planned to be opened in the coastal region.

The Nayli store covers over 2,000 square meters of selling area, the new supermarket will be home to a variety of quality products to address the immediate shopping needs of customers who live, work and vacation within Mombasa and its surrounding areas.

The Nyali store offers more than 20,000 products alongside a home-made bakery section, a fresh fishery and a butchery counter, as well as a tasty deli section plus a wide selection of non-food and electronic products.

Franck Moreau, Country Manager of Carrefour Kenya at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, said: “This is an exciting milestone for us since we ventured into Kenya in 2016, and we are looking forward to extending our quality goods and services to our customers here on the coast.”

In terms of retail performance, according to the Kenya Retail Report 2020, Mombasa recorded an average rental yield of 6.6%, 0.1% points lower than the market average of 6.7% in key urban cities.

Occupancy rates of retail spaces recorded a 3.0% point’s increase to 76.3% in 2020 from 73.3% in 2019 attributed to the reduced rental rates, from Kshs 123 per SQFT in 2019 to Kshs 114 in 2020, owing to reduced demand for retail space as some retailers shut down shops to cushion themselves from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
