Daniel Dubois faces four months on the sidelines after fracturing his eye socket in shock defeat by Joe Joyce.

Dubois has been asked to avoid all physical activity for four months, as he awaits a decision regarding which type of surgery he will need for the fracture of his left eye socket sustained in Saturday’s upset defeat by Joe Joyce.

The 23-year-old world heavyweight title hopeful also suffered nerve damage and bleeding in the retina which prompted him to retire in the tenth round of that British, Commonwealth and European championship battle.

Dubois’ promoter Frank Warren has come out to defend his fighter who has suffered a lot of criticism for taking a knee and a ten count from the referee on his way to the shocking loss to Joyce.

‘Daniel was in excruciating pain from around the third round and his corner had told him they were getting ready to stop the fight as the eye closed completely and he couldn’t see that side.

‘The criticism of Daniel has been over the top. When people are being asked to pray for Raul Jimenez after his head clash with David Luiz at Arsenal the other night you have to ask what’s the difference here between football and boxing.

‘Daniel is young and he’ll make his way back to the top. I have to make sure that Joe Joyce gets the world title shot he deserves for doing such a great job with his jab.’
