Kenya Education Ministry planning on school resumption despite a surge in Covid-19 cases.
Preparations for full reopening of schools are at an advanced stage between the ministries of Health and Education despite the current spike in Covid-19 infections.
The plan to recall all learners back to school is hinged on the fact that keeping them at home any longer will harm their well-being more, resulting to long-lasting effects on their lives in the future.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said the ministry will hold a crisis meeting this week with stakeholders to discuss new opening dates and how the school calendar will be implemented.
Since schools closed in March, there have been reports of a rise in teenage pregnancies, early marriages and child labour among learners.
Some learners in Grade 4, Standard 8 and Form Four who were recalled three weeks ago have not reported.
Concern, however, is on the increased number of Covid-19 cases in the country.
By October 30, Nairobi county had recorded 25, 226 cases, followed by Mombasa with 4,194, Kiambu 3,203, and Nakuru which 2,530 cases.
Uasin Gishu had registered 1,581 while 513 were recorded in Turkana.
On October 30, the fatality rate in the country out of COVID-19 infections rose further, after 17 people succumbed to the disease, increasing the cumulative figure to 981 deaths.
