Ajax 0 – Liverpool 1 an own goal by Nicolas Tagliafico gives Reds win.

Liverpool began their Champions League campaign with a slender but deserved 1-0 win away at the Johan Cruyff stadium in Netherlands.

Nicolas Tagliafico’s own goal 10 minutes before half-time made the difference as Liverpool beat Ajax

The Ajax left back couldn’t sort his feet out in time as he diverted the ball into his own net in the 35th minute.

It was the Reds first match without Virgil van Dijk who picked up a gruesome injury in their derby against Everton on Saturday. The injury ruled out the defender out of the rest of the season.

In the second-half, Onana produced a good save from Takumi Minamino swiftly followed by a chaotic clearance almost charged down by Diogo Jota.

Fabinho, in particular, was impressive, filling in for the injured Joel Matip, and Andrew Robertson was outstanding, his usual marauding self. Trent Alexander-Arnold came onto a good game eventually, too.

Ajax came closest either side of half-time, when Fabinho’s alertness proved invaluable. It was Tadic again, put through one on one, and lobbing Adrian beautifully.

Somehow, though, Fabinho got there first, looping the ball away inches from the line with a spectacular overhead kick. It was the sort of bold, responsible defending we have come to expect from Van Dijk.

There will be worry on Liverpool as Sadio Mane had an ice-pack wrapped around his thigh when he was withdrawn in the second half.
