Lufthansa, Germany’s largest airline plans to commence direct flights from Frankfurt to Mombasa and on to Zanzibar from 31st March 2021.

The airline’s subsidiary, Eurowings will fly the route twice a week, operating an Airbus A330 with a capacity of 283 passengers.

“The new route will provide leisure passengers an exciting travel experience and offers numerous connections at the Frankfurt hub,” said the airline’s general manager for Southern and East Africa region Andre Schulz in a notice to customers.

The flights will complement Lufthansa’s regular scheduled flights to Nairobi, which group member Swiss is also serving several times a week.

Lufthansa resumed passenger flights to Nairobi in 2015 after an 18-year hiatus.

Other airlines that offer direct flights to the region include Qatar Airway Doha and Mombasa (MBA), Polish plane – Lot Polish Charter.

The number of international tourist arrivals to Kenya in August dropped to 13,894, a 91.4 percent lower than the 161,723 arrivals recorded a similar period last year due to the novel coronavirus.
