There was great disappointment across the world as athletics fans witnessed the Kenyan remain behind as the race neared the tape.

Kipchoge was the reigning champion having smashed the record by clocking 2:01:39 after he dethroned Kenenisa Bekele who held it at a record 2:01:41.

Kipchoge had been expected to win the race after his stiff competitor Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia pulled out of the race due to a knee injury.

England’s Mo Farah had also been expected to compete for the prize but he dropped out of the race after several kilometres.

After the race, athletics fans were curious to know what happened to Kipchoge and he explained that after 25km, his ear blocked.

He revealed that it effused to open again for the whole race and that was the reason why he had to slow down but he accepted defeat saying his eyes are set on the next challenge.

“After 25 kilometers my ear blocked and it couldn’t open anymore. But this is how sport is, we should accept defeat and focus for the winning next time,” he said.

Despite Kipchoge’s loss, Kenyans were still happy after world record holder Brigid Kosgei won her second London Marathon title clocking 2:18:58.

Ruth Chepngetich finished third position behind American Sarah.
