Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-0 as Andreas Christensen sees red in the first half.
It was a clash that many awaited as Premier League champions Liverpool traveled to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea who have been by far the busiest side in the transfer window this summer.
The two managers have been taking swipes at each other over Chelsea’s summer signings, not to mention the x-rated touchline bust between the two managers the last time the two sides met.
German forward Timo Werner led the attacking forward for Frank Lampard’s side having been captured by West London side despite been linked with a move to Liverpool.
The two sides battled in midfield with Chelsea relying on the speed of Werner, sending balls into the area where the German used his pace to run onto.
The two sides looked equally matched in possession and creation of chances. With the game approaching half-time, Jordan Henderson sent a long ball for Sadio Mane to chase. Christensen could not match the Senegalese’s speed and cluttered him to the ground.
Paul Tierney showed the Danish defender a yellow card before rushing to the pitchside monitor to review the incident. It was clear that the Blues defender had prevented a goal-scoring opportunity and was immediately sent off.
Liverpool took advantage of the extra man in the second half with quick goals from Sadio Mane in the 50th and 54th minute. The second goal came from an error from goalkeeper Arrizabalaga who was closed down by Mane in the area.
Thiago Alacantara, making his debut from the bench, brought down Werner in the area, and Chelsea were awarded a penalty. Jorginho stepped up but had his effort saved by Alisson.
The result leaves Chelsea in the 10th position while Liverpool moves to third behind Arsenal.
