The fierce rivals clashed in a high-intense and volatile match that saw the referee flash 12 yellow cards before sending off five players in 180 seconds.

Marseille got the all-important goal through Thauvin who put the ball in the net from a Dimitri Payet cross in the first half.

VAR would have Angel Di Maria’s equalizer ruled for offside before Dario Benedetto’s goal for Marseille also canceled for offside.

Marseille were able to cling on to their narrow advantage after the heated fracas to punish PSG

The melee began deep in stoppage time when Marseille’s Dario Benedetto and PSG midfielder Leandro Paredes clashed following a challenge with the visitors trying to hold out to a vital win.

A clash between the players found Neymar involved, who would soon be given his marching orders for a punch on the back of the head of defender Alvaro Gonzalez after the official checked his VAR screen to review the unsavory incident.

Angel Di Maria was then sensationally accused of spitting on Gonzalez by Villas-Boas.

Layvin Kurzawa and Jordan Amavi were also caught striking out at each other with punches, with Brisard showing the pair straight red cards too.

Paredes and Benedetto were the next players banished back inside after picking up their second bookings.

PSG host Metz on Wednesday, while Marseille will entertain St Etienne.
