PSG seal domestic quadruple with win over Lyon on penalties.
PSG have clinched the final domestic quadruple in French football history after beating Lyon on penalties to win the last Coupe de la Ligue trophy.
After a goalless stalemate in normal and extra time, the final had to be decided by a shootout, which saw Lyon’s Bertrand Traore miss following 10 perfect penalties, leaving Pablo Sarabia to clinch a shootout win.
Although Lyon played better in extra time, defender Rafael was shown a red card moments from the end for a clumsy foul on PSG winger Angel Di Maria on the edge of the penalty area.
PSG was missing r Kylian Mbappe, who is recovering from ankle ligament damage sustained playing against Saint-Etienne, and now has other injury worries.
Striker Mauro Icardi, right back Layvin Kurzawa and veteran captain Thiago Silva all went off during the game with what appeared to be leg-muscle injuries.
Lyon won the League Cup in 2001, but have a dreadful record in the competition since then, losing four other finals in the competition.
The Coupe de la Ligue, which was first introduced in 1994, will now be retired following a lack of public interest, meaning the possibility of winning a domestic quadruple in French football will no longer be possible.
PSG have already lifted the Super Cup, the French Cup and Ligue 1 title this season.
