Sergio Ramos nets penalty to earn Real Madrid crucial win away at Bilbao.
Sergio Ramos scored a controversial but decisive 1-0 win over Bilbao as the Los Blancos edged closer to winning the La Liga title.
It was the Spaniard’s 22nd penalty conversion – his fifth goal since the La Liga returned.
Madrid looked to be on the way to a drop of points in the hunt for this year’s league title but had a controversial penalty awarded to them in the 70th minute.
Fullback Marcelo won the penalty after Dani Garcia stepped on the Brazilian.
Ramos slotted the spot-kick to the right of Bilbao’s keeper Unai Simon to earn Zinedine Zidane’s a much needed win.
Controversy would erupt when Ramos trod on the foot of Raul Garcia in the penalty area and the referee wave away appeals for a penalty.
The game ended with various players going face-to-face with each other after Iker Munian had clattered Luka Modric and substitute Oscar De Marcos had his hand around the throat of Marcelo, although the two made up on the final whistle.
Ramos was booked late on in the match and will now miss Madrid’s home clash against Alaves.
Madrid will also be without Eden Hazard who missed the away trip with pain in his right ankle that was operated on earlier in the year.
