Leeds edge closer to return to Premier League with win over Blackburn

Leeds United beat Blackburn 3-1 to move closer to making a return to Premier League.

Marcelo Biesla put in a spirited performance away at Blackburn to remain at the summit of the table.

Leeds United moved to within 10 points of ending a 16-year exile from the Premier League.

They went ahead in the 7th minute when leading scorer Patrick Bamford opened the scoring to what was comprehensive win for the side.

Leeds have won twice, lost and drawn once since the Championship restarted and look to be heading back to top-flight league.

Patrick Bamford scored his 15th league goal of the season when he opened the scoring early in the match
Kalvin Phillips scored a brilliant free-kick curling the ball over the wall and into the top corner for the visitors

Bamford punished the hosts when Lewis Travis coughed up possession in midfield and Mateusz Klich judged exactly the right of pass for Bamford to pass the ball first-time beyond the reach of Christian Walton and inside the goalkeeper’s right-hand upright from just inside the area.

Rovers pushed on and dominated the better part of the remaining session with creative plays in midfield that were unfortunate not to provide fruit.

Welsh forward Roberts Tyler won a free-kick for Leeds when Rovers’ Lewis Holtby lunged into him.

Kalvin Phillips took the set-piece responsibilities and sent a right-footed strike 25 yards out into the top corner to double the lead for the visitors.

Blackburn began the second half on a high note when Adam Armstrong won and converted a free-kick three minutes after the half-time break.

Mateusz Klich restored their two goal lead in the 53rd minute and earned the Peacocks a much deserved win.

Leeds now sit at the top of the table with 78 points, four above West Brom who host Hull City on Sunday
