WBC to reach out to Tyson Fury regarding plans with Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte

WBC set to discuss with Tyson Fury to discuss the fighter’s plans and status in regards to his upcoming fights.

Fury won the WBC Championship belt when he blitzed past Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas back in February this year.

He is in line to face the Bronze Bomber from Alabama as the American activated his rematch clause which is set to happen later this year.

However, the Gypsy King is mandated to fight Dillian Whyte who is the WBC Interim Champion. The fight is supposed to take place before February 2021 – failure to which the British will be stripped of the title.

Should he be stripped of the belt, the much anticipated fight between Fury and Anthony Joshua to crown a Unified Undisputed Heavyweight Champion would be jeopardized.

Fury won the WBC title from Wilder in February and is mandated to face Dillian Whyte

Top Rank Boss Bob Arum – who is also Fury’s promoter, suggested that his fighter could be upgraded to a ‘Franchise Champion’ to skip his mandatory obligation to face Whyte.

This would open a chance for Fury to take on Wilder then head straight into the Undisputed Championship clash with AJ.

Speaking to Sky Sports, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said:

‘We are addressing every weight category separately. The WBC is in the process of contacting every champion to assess their current status and plans.

We (The WBC) will be looking into each category and will review each case and rule taking into consideration the variables that have to do with each case.’

WBC upgraded Vasily Lomachenko and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez into franchise champions. ‘Franchise’ Champions are reserved meaning they are not obliged to fight mandatory contenders.

Lomachenko holds the WBA, WBC ‘franchise’ and WBO lightweight titles and will fight IBF champion Teofimo Lopez next.

At the time of upgrading, Devin Haney was upgraded from Interim Champion to full title-holder and Luke Campbell was ordered to fight for the interim belt.

Dillian Whyte last week reported that he was seeking court reprieve as he sought to fight Fury for the WBC title.

Whyte’s promoter Eddie Hearn said:

‘We’d much rather that this was not for a ‘franchise’ belt, this was for a WBC world title, and we want Dillian Whyte to get his shot at the world title.

The point of Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua and the teams agreeing to the structure of that deal – that deal can happen, that first fight can happen at the end of next summer. It will be 2021, but there is a big period of time where Dillian Whyte should be getting his shot at the world title and that’s important to us.

“There is no one that has fought for that right more than Dillian Whyte to get his opportunity at a world title.”

Whyte is currently the WBC interim champion and mandatory challenger to the full title
