Sevilla hold Barcelona to barren draw

Sevilla blew the La Liga title wide open when they held Barcelona to a barren draw on Friday night.

The result handed Real Madrid an advantage in the hunt for this season’s league title.

Barcelona traveled to Sevilla knowing a drop in points would see their archrivals close in on them in the race to this year’s title.

Messi and Co. could not break down a resilient Sevilla side in a frustrating night at Estadio Ramon Sanchez

Real Madrid trail the Catalans by three points and should they beat Real Sociedad on Sunday, they will go above Barcelona at the top of the standings due to their superior head-to-head record.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique appeared to concede the title in his postmatch interview when he said ‘Seeing how the matches have gone so far, it’s going to be very difficult for us to win this league.’

Barcelona coach Quique Setien was however optimistic citing that Madrid would also drop points adding that Pique had made his downbeat prediction in the heat of the moment.

The highly-tempered clash between the two sides ended in a barren draw

Barcelona coach Quique Setien had gambled on leaving Antoine Griezmann on the bench and playing Martin Braithwaite but the Danish international fared no better than the Frenchman, working hard but seeing little of the ball.

Luis Suarez started the game and would play his first 90 minutes since his knee operation but he also had no joy in front of goal
