Real Madrid beat Eibar and put pressure on Barcelona

Real Madrid return to action with a decisive 3-1 win over Eibar.

It was Madrid’s first competitive match since their 2-1 loss away to Real Betis back in March days before the league was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Zinedine Zidane’s side hosted Eibar at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium and it took them four minutes to open the scoring.

German Toni Kroos picked a pass from Karim Benzema who had collected the ball after Eden Hazard who was making a return to action after suffering an injury back in March.

Kroos picked his spot with a well-placed finish past Eibar’s goalkeeper Marko Dimitrovic – the German’s fourth league goal of the season.

Sergio Ramos got the second after in the 30th minute in a move started by himself.

The Spanish international won the ball at the back and went storming forward on a 60 metre run. He released Benzema but kept on running and when Benzema played Hazard in space down the right the former Chelsea forward just had to roll the ball across the face of the goal allowing Ramos to score into an empty net from close range.

Marcelo added a third in the 37th minute and the Belgian was involved once more. He linked up well with Benzema before shooting.

His shot was saved but the ball came out to Marcelo who controlled it and smashed it home before dedicating his celebration to the Black Lives Matter campaign taking a knee and raising a fist.

Eibar put up a fight in the second half that saw substitute Pedro Bigas pull one goal back for the visitors, put that did little to change the result that saw Madrid mount pressure on league leaders Barcelona in the race for the league title.
