Professor Stephen Kiama on Friday became the 8th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi.
“I confirm, with humility, that I solemnly and respectfully accept the honour to serve my country in this position. To all of you, I am truly honoured by your presence this morning – albeit for most of you – virtually,” said Prof. Kiama.
“In faith, we will reclaim our glory and build an academic edifice that will inspire fresh hope and push the frontiers of university education locally, regionally and internationally. If you allow, the University of Nairobi is sailing a new tide. And talking of times and their curious ways, together, I am confident we can seize the tide and secure our ventures.”
Kiama replaces Prof Peter Mbithi whose bid to serve for a second term was rejected last year.
He was handed the instruments of power which include; The Constitution of Kenya, The Universities Act. No. 42 of 2012 (2015, 2016, 2018), The University of Nairobi Charter 2013, The Universities Standards and Guidelines, 2014, The Code of Conduct and Ethics for Public Universities, 2009, The University of Nairobi Statutes, The University of Nairobi Seal, The UoN Logo, The Replica of the Fountain of Knowledge, The Custody of Nairobi Records and the University of Nairobi Mace.
Professor Kiama is a Kenyan veterinary surgeon and academic who, effective 3rd January 2020, became the 8th Vice-Chancellor, University of Nairobi.
He holds an earned doctorate degree in Structural Biology from the University of Bern in Switzerland.
He is an accomplished scholar with a proven track record in formulating and managing academic programs and on research and publication.
He has over 16 years’ experience in management and leadership positions at the University of Nairobi.
A Vice Chancellor is the academic and administrative head of the University and is responsible to the Council for maintaining and promoting the academic image and maintaining and promoting the efficiency and good order of the University.
The University of Nairobi is ranked 7 among the top 10 universities in Africa in 2020 by the African Exponent. The ranking is based on licenses, accreditation by the relevant bodies in each country, mode of delivery of the courses; teaching and learning, four-year undergraduate degree and postgraduate programs offered.
In February, it was the only institution of higher learning in Kenya that made it in The World University Rankings 2020 at position 801 globally and 20th in Africa in the list.
