Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced that LaLiga can resume as early as June 8.
June 8 is four days earlier than when the country’s football management had anticipated resuming the 2019/20 season that had been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Spanish clubs had been allowed to restart training this week, two months after the pandemic crippled sporting events around the globe.
In a statement, the Prime Minister said:
The time has come to recover many of our daily activities. From June 8 La Liga will be able to return. Spanish football has a huge following but it will not be the only recreation activity that will return.
Football in Spain was suspended back in March amid the coronavirus pandemic but LaLiga clubs began training sessions on Monday morning.
Players were no longer training on their own as they trained in groups of ten. However, they could only pass the ball between themselves and could not take part in free-kick drills or play five-a-side matches.
Spain’s second-tier division, Segunda, has also been cleared to resume on the same date.
Spain is one of the countries worst-affected by the coronavirus outbreak, with more than 28,000 deaths and more than 234,000 cases of infection diagnosed.
