Serie A given deadline to finish 2019/20 season

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) have set a deadline for Italian leagues to complete the 2019/20 season.

Series A, B and C are were suspended back in March due to the coronavirus pandemic that adversely hit the European nation.

In a statement, the administering body informed that September 1 has been set as the commencement of the 2020/21 football calendar.

The statement read:

The FIGC has expressed its willingness to restart and complete the national professional competition by setting the last closing date for Serie A, B and C competitions to 20 August.

The Italian Government gave an all-clear message to all Italian Clubs to begin making plans of football resumption with the clubs allowed to resume training.

The statement further informed that the resumption of games will be guided by the federal council in consultation with health officials.

It read:

“Prior to the re-start of the competitive activity, it will be the responsibility of the federal council to determine the criteria for defining competitions where, due to Covid-19, the season should be suspended again.”

Italian sports minister Vincenzo Spadafora has already announced that a decision on when the season can resume will be made after a meeting with football officials on May 28.

The coronavirus adversely hit Italy, claiming 32,486 lives with over 220,00 confirmed positive of the virus.
