Kenya’s Former President Moi to be Accorded State Burial

President Daniel arap Moi will be accorded a state funeral, with all appropriate civilian and full military honours being observed.

The former head of state died Tuesday aged 95 at the Nairobi Hospital in the presence of his family.

President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered that flags be flown at half-mast as an expression of public sorrow from Tuesday until sunset on the day of Moi’s burial.

“Under the authority vested in me as the President of the Republic of Kenya and the Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, do hereby order and direct that in testimony of the respect in which the memory of the Late Daniel Toroitich arap Moi is held, the nation will observe a period of National mourning from today until the day of his funeral,” said the head of state.

“ He added, “ the late Daniel Toroitich arap Moi shall be accorded a State Funeral with all appropriate Civilian and Full Military Honours being rendered and observed”.

“Mzee Moi’s life and service is an undeniable legacy of success against daunting odds. It is also a challenge to our generation to rise up to the great responsibility of serious nation-building, to have courage to face our challenges
without blinking, and to use his fine example to take Kenya forward.,” Said William Ruto, the Deputy President.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga said, ” To his credit, President Moi gave in to the clamour for change and allowed the country to return to multiparty politics. He was constantly able to ease pressure in the country through incremental reforms. Moi and I reconciled after the political differences of the 1980s and early 90s and we were able to work together to bring more reforms to the country.”
