Spanish delivery startup Glovo plans to increase its footprint in Nairobi Metropolitan Area in 2020.

Glovo Regional Head of Marketing, Sub Sahara Africa, Priscilla Muhiu says they will focus more on different features that will smoothen customer use and experience.

“What we want to do is focus more on user experience and introduce features that improve user experience such as M-PESA integration which we will work on in the coming year.”

Glovo is a marketplace that allows users to order, send and receive anything. The app has predefined categories from which users can choose – Food, Stores, Supermarket, Grocery or Beverages.

“Distance is a major priority to us and we will do what we did with Kitengela by making the two areas to accessible, however, we first want to ensure that we have perfected where we are in operation first,” Muhiu said.

Food and beverage categories are the most common according to the latest data from Jumia Food Index Report 2019. The data found out that affordability, convenience, and availability of these categories have been the main driver of these trends.

“In 2020 Jumia Food expects the growth in on-demand deliveries to accelerate by over 50%. This on the back of a continuation of the trend of more affordable menu items, enhanced availability of popular vendors, increased mobile penetration and a growing awareness of the convenience.”

They also project strong growth in on-demand deliveries of non-restaurant items like Groceries, Pharmacare products, Alcohols and other on-demand categories such as cosmetics, gifting, and flowers.

Glovo was launched on the Romanian market in May 2018. Glovo operates in over 257 cities in 33 countries, including all major capitals of Europe and EMEA, such as Rome, Madrid, Paris, Kiev, as well as in 9 countries in South America such as Peru, Argentina, Ecuador and Panama.

In Africa, Glovo operates in Kenya, Morocco, Egypt and Ivory Coast. Glovo has partnered with a wide range of establishments, including restaurants, supermarkets, butcheries, bakeries, gift shops and as well as a network of Bike riders (Glovers) to deliver the products.

Every month, around 3 million orders are being delivered through the app under an average delivery time of 45 minutes.
