It was not a special moment for newly appointed Tottenham Hotspur coach Jose Mourinho when he returned to Old Trafford on Wednesday night as he only managed to walk away with a 1-2 loss to his former team.

Mourinho was given the boot nearly a year ago at Old Trafford after a series of poor performance while in charge of the Red Devils.

A successful tactician across several leagues, Mourinho, failed to spur the Red Devils back to its glorious days after taking over a tattered team from Louis van Gaal.
Van Gaal had taken over from David Moyes who had also failed to match his predecessor Sir Alex Fergusson.

During Mourinho’s reign, Manchester United fans had been hopeful the Portuguese would take them back to winning but he only managed two cups.
After his departure, he stayed jobless for almost a year before he landed a job at Tottenham Hotspur after Argentine Mauricio Pochettino was fired following a bad start to the season.

At Spurs, Mourinho has already recorded impressive results but he was dealt a blow when his team was beaten 2-1 by his former team – Manchester United.
Following the results at Old Trafford, Mourinho has taken issue with Man United’s defensive game saying they play well against good teams by falling back to defend.

“United results against the best teams this season have been good,” he said after the Wednesday night match.

“For the way they play, it is easier for them. They are not afraid to have a defensive approach. It is easier for them against better teams, against teams who want more of the ball,” he added.
