Andy Michael Munyiri is the best student in the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams with 440 out of 500 marks.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said the top candidate had 440 marks, followed by three other candidates who tied in the second position with 439 marks.
Flavian Onyango, June Cheptoo Koech of Sing’aro Girls and Sean Michael Ndung’u of Kitengela International tied in second place.
Out of the 1,088,986 candidates who sat for the exam which commenced on October 29 and completed on October 31, candidates who scored 400 and above marks dropped from over 11,000 to 9,770.
According to the 2019 results, 527,294 boys (50.1 percent) and 525,070 girls (49.9 percent) sat for the examinations.
The number of those who sat the exams was higher compared to those in 2018 (1,052,364).
56 teachers are being investigated for misconduct during KCPE
The Teachers Service Commission is investigating 56 teachers over misconduct during the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) besides Prof, Magoha downplaying cases of irregularities.
“We are investigating the 56 teachers implicated, but we will recognise the many who ensured the exam was a success,” said TSC boss Nancy Macharia .
“The results we are releasing today have minimal cases of irregularities, none of the papers was leaked and we also had zero cases of fake exam papers,” noted Prof. Magoha.
100% transition policy to secondary school
The Ministry of Education said it will ensure that every child who sits for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination is admitted to a secondary school under the 100 percent transition policy.
“I am proud to report that in 2019, the Ministry of Education achieved this policy by admitting all of the 2018 candidates to secondary schools. I wish to assure the country that the Ministry has put in place measures to fulfill the 100 percent transition policy in 2020.” said Magoha.
ELIMU SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME will be run under the Secondary Education Quality Improvement Project
On the Free Day Tuition programme in secondary schools, he said it has provided an opportunity for many children from needy families to attend school and further ensured that the 100 percent transition policy becomes a reality.
“To further enhance the programme, the Government will from next year put 9,000 Form One students from targeted regions under a full scholarship programme called ELIMU SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME.”
