The United States of America has decided to re-establish its embassy in Mogadishu since its closure in 1991 during the Somali Civil War.
Tibor Nagy, Assistant Secretary for US Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs said, “The reestablishment of the US Embassy Mogadishu today (Wednesday) is a sign of our commitment to partner with Somalia in its efforts to build a stable, credible and democratic country.”
The US government re-established a permanent diplomatic presence in Mogadishu in December 2018 with the US Mission in Somalia.
Ambassador Donald Yamamoto who officiated the transition said: “It is a significant and historic day that reflects Somalia’s progress in recent years, and another step forward in regularising US Diplomatic engagement in Mogadishu since recognizing the federal government of Somalia in 2013.”
Ambassador Ali Sharif Ahmed is the Somalia Ambassador to the United States.
