Petrol and diesel prices were increased marginally across major cities in Kenya, but a reprieve to consumers who use kerosene, whose price has dropped.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) Saturday increased the price of a litre of super petrol by KSh 0.28 and that of diesel by KSh 2.44, citing a fall and a rise in the landed cost of the two commodities respectively.

The price of kerosene has been dropped by KSh 3.31 per litre.

Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will now retail at KSh. 112.81, KSh. 103.04 and KSh. 100.64 respectively in Nairobi beginning 15 Sept. 2019 to 14 October 2019.

The change in the price of crude oil in the international market directly influences the price of crude oil in the domestic market.

“The changes in this month’s (September) prices have been as a consequence of the average landed cost of imported Super petrol decreasing by 0.22% from US$ 498.46 per cubic metre in July 2019 to US$ 497.36 per cubic metre in August 2019. Diesel increasing by 4.38% from US$ 482.47 per cubic metre to US$ 503.61 per cubic metre and kerosene decreasing by 5.61% from US$ 513.10 per cubic metre to US$ 484.29 per cubic metre.”

Over the same period, the Kenyan shilling depreciated by 0.13 percent against the dollar, exchanging at KSh103.31 per dollar compared with Sh103.44 the previous month.

The pump prices are inclusive of the eight percent value-added tax that was introduced in last year’s Finance Act.
