Almaz Negash, the Executive Director African Diaspora Network, has been selected to receive the 2019 Trade with Africa – Diaspora Leader of the Year award.

Negash is a social entrepreneur who believes in the power of individuals to gain economic self-sufficiency through social enterprise development and employment. 

“This is in recognition of her distinguished leadership and contribution within the African Diaspora community and beyond,” said Toyin Umesiri, CEO Nazaru LLC and Founder of the Trade with Africa Business Summit.

In response to being selected, Negash said, “It is an honor and I appreciate the opportunity to receive the award as it represents our shared vision for Africa and the communities in which we live.”

The award will be presented during the 2nd edition of the Trade with Africa Business Summit in Chicago scheduled between August 1st & 2nd, 2019.

The 2nd edition is themed: Growing U.S. – Africa Trade, Trade Financing & Developing Africa’s Supply Chain.

Negash who immigrated to the United States in 1987 from Eritrea, through her network, they partner with Silicon Valley companies to invest in projects that impact Africa.

She is currently the Sr. managing director of Step Up Silicon Valley, a social innovation network and anti-poverty lab focused on increasing economic self-sufficiency through convening, advocating for policy changes, and incubating innovative solutions.

Negash is a member of the United Nations Economic Council for Africa High-Level Panel on Immigration and Migration, the co-founder of Global Women Leadership Network (GWLN). 

She is the author of an article on the Role of Africans in the Diaspora published in 2013 and contributing author of Awakening Social Responsibility published in 2007.
