Michael Joseph has been announced as Safaricom’s acting chief executive following the death of Bob Collymore with immediate effect.

“The board is confident that during this transition, Mr Joseph will provide the necessary guidance and leadership to the company and its employees,” Company Secretary Kathryne Maundu said in a statement.

“Mr. Joseph will hold this position until the Board communicates in due course on a permanent appointment,” said Maundu.

Mr. Joseph sits on the Safaricom board , he is the M-Pesa Foundation Academy chair and also the current chairman of Kenya Airways.

Previously, Michael was the CEO of Safaricom Limited from July 2000 when the company was re-launched as a joint-venture between Vodafone UK and Telkom Kenya until his retirement in November 2010.

During his tenure, he steered the company from a subscriber base of less than 20,000 to over 16.71 million subscribers. Mr. Michael is also credited as the one who spearheaded the launch of the world’s leading mobile money platform M-Pesa.
